Basil and cut aromatic herbs
Basil
Genovese DOP Basil is the king of herbs in Liguria and its cultivation in the Albenga plain benefits from an ideal microclimate, whether grown in greenhouses in pots or soil-free, or in open fields.
Among the 60 known varieties and cultivars of Basil, the “Classic Ligurian” variety is characterized by medium-small, oval, and convex leaves; the color is light green, and its fragrance is much more delicate than other types of basil.
Cultivating it in pots allows for harvesting without the manual work typically required for ground-grown basil, as plants are potted for distribution.
Soil-free cultivation in greenhouses, adopted by some companies in the Albenga plain, allows for a certified Organic product, though not DOP (the regulations specify that only field cultivation can achieve this certification). Soil-free cultivation optimizes water use and nutrients (with precise irrigation), and makes it easier to care for and harvest the plants, whether for potting or creating the famous "basil bouquets" highly requested by the HO.RE.C.A. sector, often harvested with a clump of soil to extend their life cycle.
