Basil and cut aromatic herbs

Albenga herbs are known, requested and appreciated throughout Europe. The mild climate and frequent winds create the ideal environment for the production of herbs, which are cultivated both in open fields and greenhouses year-round.

Basil

Genovese DOP Basil is the king of herbs in Liguria and its cultivation in the Albenga plain benefits from an ideal microclimate, whether grown in greenhouses in pots or soil-free, or in open fields.
Among the 60 known varieties and cultivars of Basil, the “Classic Ligurian” variety is characterized by medium-small, oval, and convex leaves; the color is light green, and its fragrance is much more delicate than other types of basil.
Cultivating it in pots allows for harvesting without the manual work typically required for ground-grown basil, as plants are potted for distribution.
Soil-free cultivation in greenhouses, adopted by some companies in the Albenga plain, allows for a certified Organic product, though not DOP (the regulations specify that only field cultivation can achieve this certification). Soil-free cultivation optimizes water use and nutrients (with precise irrigation), and makes it easier to care for and harvest the plants, whether for potting or creating the famous "basil bouquets" highly requested by the HO.RE.C.A. sector, often harvested with a clump of soil to extend their life cycle.

Albenga Herbs

Aromatic plants

Thinking of Liguria and talking about herbs is a classic, especially among culinary enthusiasts who use simple, typical ingredients that can enrich dishes with their flavor.
The western Riviera and, in particular, the Albenga plain, undoubtedly enjoys a unique microclimate influenced directly by the sea, which enhances the scents, and by the cooler breeze from the nearby inland, which helps preserve their longevity.
The aromas and fragrances that define the cultivation of herbs are truly unique.
At L’Ortofrutticola, we are lucky to have among our 600 member-suppliers many farms that grow these plants in a variety of species: rosemary, thyme, marjoram, sage, laurus nobilis, oregano, lavender, and parsley, which flood the plain with their aromas whenever the mistral wind blows.
Cultivated in fields or greenhouses, the herbs ensure a continuous supply and the Cooperative guarantees distribution across various Italian and foreign markets.
These products are particularly appreciated in colder European countries and in kitchens where herbs are used raw to preserve their organoleptic characteristics and medicinal properties. Northern Europe, Northern Switzerland and Germany are the primary markets for these products, but even the most renowned Michelin-starred restaurants in Italy are major customers for our fragrant plants.
To meet the demand for certified aromatic herbs with guaranteed quality, we created the Herbolaria line, selecting exclusively those companies that have obtained Global G.A.P. certification. The Herbolaria line features dedicated packaging and exclusive packaging lines.
